There are worse ways to go, I suppose.

So, I'm yawning and driving home from Disney on Ice last night, listening to Corinne and her friend giggle their blond heads off about, oh, everything. I couldn't help laughing at their discussions about gas and bodily functions (girls really can be just as gross as boys). And then it became a competition about everything from who had the most fun to who could yell the loudest (a tie) to who was the most tired.

"I'm sooooo tired!"
"No, I'm sooooo tired!"
"I'm more tired!"

Giggle. Giggle. Tee-hee.

"I'm so tired, I think I'll take a nap right now," I interjected at the steering wheel.

"Ok!" said the friend, "You can just scootch over and I'll drive and if a policeman pulls me over and says 'lemme see your license' I'll show him your license. And if he says 'This doesn't look like you' I'll just tell him that I've had some work done recently!"

And I died from the laughter that burst from my gut.

Right there. Death from laughing.

There are definitely worse ways to go.

A little Pixie Dust on a winter day...

Ever want a surefire way to brighten up a wintry gloom? Take 3 three-year-old girls to see Disney on Ice, Worlds of Fantasy!
My mom and I took Corinne and my 2 youngest nieces last night on "an adventure" (says my niece) into Chicago. Pigtails were bobbing and the giggles were more akin to shrieks of delight as the lights went out and the ice came to life...
I am so happy we made the effort to do this. The girls were at the perfect ages for a show like this one. And my mood has carried through to this morning, leaving me grinning for no apparent reason...

Fabulous seats are still available in Chicago. And I have some codes for extra savings for you!

Finding my silver linings...

Things to be upbeat about:

1. On Saturday, my mother and I are taking Corinne and my 2 nieces (who are also 3 years old) to see the Disney on Ice World of Fantasy show at the United Center. Yet another reason to be thankful for the opportunities that blogging brings! My wallet may be bare, but my "hobby" allows me to enjoy a magical night with 3 giggling girls.

After realizing that the second half of the show was entirely about Tinkerbell, I decided to leave the boys at home with Daddy and just take the little girls and my mom out for this fun night. Plus, the little ones will be happy with fruit chews and sippy cups instead of begging for pizza and pop and everything that the boys would be hoping for. (though, I have to admit, the United Center DOES have some good pizza....)

2. My van door ISN'T broken! We tried to get into the van this morning and the lock wouldn't fully lock or unlock, so the door couldn't open. JOY! I had to have Justin climb through the middle door with his brother and all I could picture was getting in an accident and not having that front door available to escape through. This is how my brain works...

I was thrilled, to say the least, at the thought of spending more money we don't have to fix it or just climbing around through the back door for months and months. Well, when I got home from dropping the boys off, I decided to give it one last shot. I pretended to be a locksmith and held my ear by the door, listening and praying for a tiny click of any kind... The heavens opened and I heard a click! I was able to open it by hanging through the window and using my foot as a brace and... well. Let's just say it's a good thing I'm still flexible.

I opened and shut that thing about 20 times before going inside, just to be sure...

3. Hazelnut cinnamon coffee. Sometimes you HAVE to splurge on the good stuff. (well, BETTER stuff. I still buy Folgers or whatever is on sale, but I make sure it's my favorite flavors...)

4. Knowing that I CAN make dinners from a practically bare cupboard and fridge. I mean, WOW. Last night I scraped together food to make stuffed peppers with risotto. And it was DAMN good. Tonight I think I have the makings for either Italian wedding soup (with a few minor alterations as I am out of ground beef of any kind to make meatballs) or an egg and ham casserole. I am actually cooking more Meals now that I am shopping less. (less. Heh. I said "less". I meant "Not shopping")

5. We are healthy. We are still able to heat the house. Though we are struggling, we are NOT as financially hurting as some people are. Things always CAN be worse, and I am grateful for the blessings I have.

6. You guys keep on coming back, even when I whine and cry. Thank you. I can feel the balance shifting within me as I write this. I'm not "back" yet, but I'm so much closer to being fully aware than I was just a few days ago. Thanks for holding my hand and patting my back. I really do appreciate it.

Baby, it's cold outside!

Normally, when you head indoors, it warms up. Unless you're heading into the Ice Capades!!

I had never been to an ice skating show in my life, until last year. Never! Not an Ice Capades, skating competition or even a hockey game. (All of you North of Illinois are wondering how this was possible, I know...)

So, when my mother-in-law bought us tickets to High School the Musical on Ice last winter, I was a bit leery. My kids never really liked the movies (oh darn!) and I had only memories of the Ice Capades being mocked by my friends at about age 15 (when everything is lame, apparently).

They loved it! Corinne danced, Evan clapped along and even Justin had a good time (the United Center has good pizza).

When my generous Mother in law bought us all tickets for Disney on Ice this past fall, I couldn't refuse. The Incredibles had a trip to Disneyland, which made me and my kids all nostalgic and wishing we could afford Disney this year (ain't gonna happen. Hoping for 2010...).

So, when I was contacted to do a post about the next Disney on Ice, which just so happens to feature THESE characters? I had to comply...
Can you imagine my own little Tinkerbell at this show??? Crossing my fingers that we can make it!

Thankfully(for my boys), they do have other characters. It appears that this particular show will be a compilation of several shows and characters, all of which my children enjoy.

Disney on Ice is coming back to the Chicagoland area. Check out the dates and tickets. With less of us being able to go on vacations this year, day outings like this will be a fun way to spend time with the family, enjoying the magic of Disney, without the cost of travel.

Wanna meet me there?

The Rosy side...

Ok. One can choose to look at the bright side of every situation, right? Let's see how I can flip these situations to make them a bit rosier, shall we?

Yes, my head was in a right sorry state yesterday. So much so that I not only took DayQuil, but also liquid Tylenol. For anyone who doesn't know me well, I don't take medication. I think the last time I took pain reliever was when Corinne was born. Maybe a headache or two since then, but really? It's a rarity. Anyway. I'm double dosed on foreign chemicals, the kids are in the van, I put my last $20 in the tank, and we were off to Disney on Ice.

The rosy part here? The fact that the medication was working enough for me to stop crying? Or the fact that I BY CHANCE googled the directions to the Allstate Arena (where I THOUGHT the show was at) and realized BY A FLUKE that it was actually at the United Center. Um, yes. That was a miracle. (FYI, my mother-in-law was meeting us there and she had bought the tickets for us).

About 30 minutes into our drive, I realized a major issue: I spent my last $20 on gas. My credit card is practically full, thanks to recent gas price increases, and I don't own an ATM card (I am soooo 20th century. I know. Also? My phone is not a camera. You may guffaw now...). You can see the situation I was in, right? The situation as in SCREWED because Chicago is not the city of friendly free parking, nor was it sunny so that we could have walked from a meter spot (if one even exists in that area). So, in the pouring rain, I tried to reach MIL. Finally got through to her as we were driving past the United Center!! Dream that she is, she met me in the pouring rain at the gate to pay for our parking.

Rosy side here: 1. my big red van. Again, my gas guzzling monstrosity is easy to spot in a crisis and my MIL could find me in the rain in Chicago. 2. My MIL. She's awesome. I mean, it was RAINING HARD, folks...

The show was cute. Adorable, even. Corinne was smiling from the get-go, Evan was clapping his hands and pointing the directions that the Incredibles were telling the audience to, and Justin had pizza and a snowcone. All were happy. I must say, they did a really cool job with the sets and costumes. The Incredibles were supposed to be visiting Disneyland so we got to see icy versions of our favorite Disney rides. And now? Now we all want to go back to the Magic Kingdom!

Unfortunately, my medication was wearing off by then. We scooted through the rain and hopped in the van.... Annnnnd.... Got Lost.

Notice the capital letters on "Got Lost?" Yes, that would be because I was driving with 3 kids in a huge honking van in Chicago in the rain with a pounding headache and only 1/4 tank of gas and NO money and honestly? I WAS LOST.

Rosy side? Ummmm... Corinne fell right asleep, so that alleviated my headache just a touch. Evan was reading his Waldo book and was silent. And Justin was helpful! So helpful, actually. He was calm and looked for signs. He isn't able to really read the city map yet, but was the watcher of all stoplights so I could scan the map and try to figure out how in the heck I got turned around trying to find the Interstate. It's nice to have an older kid, you know?

The rosiest side: We made it. I found a street I knew which led to the highway and we made it. We didn't get in an accident (like so many people did yesterday...) and we didn't get into traffic. We didn't get stuck in the flooding roads, though we definitely went through some areas that were dangerous. And our basement isn't getting water!

In case you didn't know, the Midwest is getting some serious water this week. So much, in fact, that my kids' school is CLOSED due to flooding. I do believe, in all of my 32 years of living in NE Illinois, that I have never experienced a closure of schools due to flooding. Thankfully, there isn't any rain falling at this moment. But the sky is overcast and we are, I believe, due for more rain today... Here's to hoping that the water holds off another couple of days until the rivers and lakes have a chance to go down.
