How many calories can I burn by blogging?

I may have mentioned once or twenty times on Facebook that I'm trying to exercise and lose weight. If you haven't noticed, then you either
A. Block my updates
B. Aren't my friend or
C. Never check Facebook.

But really, any of those reasons are kind of a cop-out. YOU SHOULD KNOW THIS ABOUT ME. Because it's making me a bit manic.

I mean, I rarely fantasize about chicken breasts on the grill. But when I've spent the entire day counting the calories in a freaking handful of wheat thins and doing aerobics in front of my SOOOper peppy aerobics dvd and even forcing myself to go on a long "power-walk" while my kids are at their lessons (Yes. I even did that whole butt-clench-tummy-clench thing that makes your butt imitate a 1950's housewife); well, after all of that? A chicken breast starts to sound like a gourmet meal.

After a long and painful ride home in the family truckster which involved whining AND threats AND moaning AND yelling, I threw open the front door of the house; fully irritated and positively starving.

The air was aromatic. Absolutely, deliciously full of the scent of perfectly spiced Italian-seasoning chicken. On the phone, Patrick had told me he'd made 12 breasts! How would I be able to eat just one?!?

The table was set for the last 3 of us to come home. There was a bowl of stuffing and forks and knives and... 2 chicken breasts.

Two. Chicken breasts.

I. Was. Livid.

I yelled up the stairs "How could you DO this?" and "You guys are PIGS!" and "There are THREE OF US!" and "Don't you know how freaking HUNGRY I AM!?!??"

Patrick yelled back down that "It wasn't my fault!" and "We didn't eat them all!" and that Penny, our sweet, sweet puppy, had gotten into the chicken.

I slowly turned to fixate on our 22 pound terrier mix pup.

I glared. She jauntily tilted her head.

I flung several pantry and refrigerator doors about in an attempt to make her feel guilty. She sat down crookedly and began to chew on a pair of sunglasses.

Patrick heard the ruckus* and (very bravely) crept downstairs. "Want me to make you something else?"

"NO!!. What I want is to have MY chicken breast!" The kids were devouring the remaining two. And damnit, they smelled soooo good! "How did she get them, anyway??"

"I kind of left the chicken on the table... and the chair was pulled out... and I went upstairs to watch the game..."

"Why didn't you just write her a freaking invitation?!? She is going to be SO sick!"

"Oh, she didn't EAT them. At least, not all of them. She hid one under the computer desk, one in the corner, one under the couch, and we found another one in her blankets in her crate. She was saving them for later."

I felt a lick on my kneecap. She was trying desperately to win me back. But it wasn't going to work. I was too angry...

Damnit. She's freaking cute.

Sigh... So I heated up leftover pasta AGAIN and snatched a few bites from the kids' chicken (and it WAS really REALLY good) and got over it. Though I feared what even that one or two chicken breasts would do to her stomach overnight.

Thankfully, her crate was free of any surprises today and we went about our morning routine as usual. I sat on the floor to fold the laundry that was dumped in the middle of the family room and began sorting out what we would need for our little weekend trip. Shorts for me, shirt for Evan, underwear for Patrick...

OH MY GOD WHAT IS THAT IN THE LAUNDRY???

It looked like a dead baby... something.

And it was.

It was a dead chicken.

Or just its breast, at least.

Nestled in a pair of Pat's underwear for safekeeping.
Note: this is a random bone, not the chicken breast. Because that would be one freakishly large chicken breast. Maybe one from a bird that's had implants or something...
"My bad. Was that chicken not for the entire family? I'm sorry; I thought I was a part of this family, too. "

*In 6 years of blogging, I daresay that I've never used that word before. I just thought that I should note this occasion.

Oh, the Inhumanity of it all...

I, Penny, the WonderPup, have many talents. One of them is balancing random items on my head while my annoying family takes pictures for the internet. Even worse, my family makes me "stay" before I can chew on that bone they're holding hostage...

A hunting cap! In case I need to keep my ears warm when I'm chasing those damn robins? I'm a DOG. This is not dignified.

A ceramic plate from a tea set! Because, why not? Go ahead, place it on my head and laugh while inside I am plotting the fastest method of destroying all of your tupperware...

Sigh... Really?

A politically incorrect Native American head dress. I am so disgusted with them by this time that I cannot even make eye contact...

And.... scene. A girl can only handle so much, and while the bone was  nice and all, I DO have a little bit of dignity.

Sigh... you really can't blame them for going a little overboard on the "cute puppy with random items balanced on her head" shots. I mean, I AM pretty freaking cute.

This is not a dog blog. I promise.

There are few things as hysterical as watching your puppy experience the joy that is a dog park for the first time.

The mud was monumental.

Saturday tidbits

Got lost trying to find the parking lot for my NBC thingy today. Managed to drive around the Wacker/Michigan Ave/Ohio Street area for about 20 minutes, looking for the dang parking lot. I finally found a pay to park spot for 75 cents (score) and RAN to the studio, 15 minutes late. If I appear somewhat flustered and forget a few key points that I wanted to focus on, it's because I had been swearing at the top of my lungs just moments before in my van.

Great way to start the day, right?

~~
The kids planted some seedlings and they are slowly popping their way through the squishy dirt. How does one "grow" lettuce, anyway? Because we've got seedlings in my living room window. And I fear that they may require a lot of work...

~~
Evan and his buddy at the gift shop of the Navy Pier's Children's Museum reading a book with LOTS of interest...
~~

Mmmmm.... chicken soup's on the stove top. Evan isn't feeling so fabulous today, so I stayed home from Justin's soccer game to take care of him and finish cleaning the house (which is why I'm on the computer. Yeah...) for Justin's birthday party (tomorrow!). It smells divine. Hope it helps Evie feel better...The last picture before he turned 13. I am not doing well with that number. Not at all...

~~

Sitting in the last drops of today's sunshine, drinking wine from a coffee mug. Time to do the dishes; time to shake this disconnected feeling...My sunshine buddy. She and I spend every afternoon chasing the rays across the room...

When All Else Fails? Puppies!

The Cure For Every Blogger's Writer's Block? Puppies!
Lots and lots of gratuitous (is that redundant?) puppy pictures!
A girl who knows how to take over a household in only a week!
Formerly known as "The Gamer's Chair." Currently known as "Penny's Territory."
Making Friends. Establishing boundaries. Realizing our dog is so freaking small that she can fit between the railings of our fence. Wondering how much rabbit fencing costs...
Ever try to take pictures of a puppy on her first experience in snow? A lot of the shots will look like this...
But it was worth nearly dropping my expensive camera in the snow to get this one shot.

And there you have it. When we breeders stop breeding, we adopt puppies, and the dogs begin to rule our blogs. You will notice one of my children in 2 of the pictures. I feel that this qualifies as ample photographic evidence that this remains a "Mommy" Blog.

The Cutest Puppy Ever

I have to say, it's the truth. Our new puppy, Penny, looks like a miniature version of Tramp from Lady and the Tramp. One ear up. One ear down...
She already knows who her mama is. I swear, this dog is a freaking GENIUS!
The kids are going crazy over having our first DOG. Everything she's doing is aDORable.
I have to agree with them. I mean, look at that EAR. That EAR. That floppy, adorable ear!
Smudge wasn't 100% convinced, though. No hatred yet. Just annoyed curiosity.
She's going to be spoiled ROTTEN.
Well, maybe not rotten. But definitely loved to pieces.
Even Justin had to admit she was pretty darn cute.
And I am overwhelmed with love for this 4-legged little girl. I can't stop smiling!

And they call it, puppy looooovvveee....

My apologies, in advance. If you are not a dog person, then you may want to click "unsubscribe" on your feed readers right now, for I fear that this blog will either suffer from :
a: neglect or
b: inundation of puppy pictures.
Which do you prefer? To never hear from me again because my children are no where near as exciting as a new little ball of fur will be or to have to indulge my gushing and fawning over a 4-legged canine? For I know that I have become what I always feared would happen once my children were past the baby stages; once we finally brought a dog into our home to compensate for the lack of neediness that an infant or toddler requires...
I have become a Dog Freak.
You know the type: the people who talk about their dogs as though they are actual members of the family. The people who spend 15 minutes reading the ingredients on the backs of all of the puppy food bags, just to be sure that their own precious ball of fur is getting the best of the best. The people who honestly believe that other people are just as interested in their DOG as they would be in a HUMAN CHILD.
I'm SORRY! I have gone over to the dark side, and she's not even in our home yet!
Alas. I cannot resist. I MUST gush! If I can no longer procreate to find blog fodder, then I will gush about this puppy which is occupying my mind just as much as my impending pregnancies did. I AM OBSESSING. It is not pretty.
But my floppy, furry, goofy little puppy is pretty damn cute. And when she comes home on Saturday, you're all going to fall in love with her, too.
Just you wait and see.
(Dude. I just yelled out "Stop running through the house with a pickle on a fork!" I guess my kids aren't so dull after all?)
