Shoot. Me. Now.

It's been a lovely morning so far, really. At least, it was. Until I picked up a certain 5 year old from kindergarten. A certain 5 year old that is currently upstairs screaming hysterically "Help me! Owie! You're Scary! You're scaring me, Mommy! WHY are you so MEAN?!?"

I am typing this as a means of not throttling that child. Deep breaths....

Why is he hysterical, you ask? Well. We had planned on Evan going outside with our neighbor boy after kindergarten, today. In the van, the first words out of his mouth are "Can I just wear the black stretchy gloves today?"

To which I replied: "No. You have to wear either 2 pairs of stretchy or your snow gloves."

To which All. Hell. Broke. Loose.

He is upstairs and I am downstairs and all will be fine as long as he calms down AWAY from me, for I am ready to unplug every electronic device, pitch every toy and take away all privileges for a week! The rudeness! The outright defiance!! And the lovely "You're scaring me!" which he knows goes right to the core of making me upset. And to which I always reply (very maturely):

"You think I'm scary? You haven't even SEEN Scary, kid!"

I know. Mother of the year, right?
~~~~~
As I've typed this, he has stopped bellowing. I'll wait for a few minutes and see what's up. I'll bet you Corinne went upstairs to console him.
~~~

Ok, Edited to add: He calmed down, put on 2 pairs of stretchy gloves and went out to play with our neighbor and Corinne. They were out for over an hour! Awesome. I'm heading up to put Corinne down for a nap!

Swingsets are NOT just for summertime!

Oh, I feel for you, Tracey! I can remember my son's (plural!) both around that age just having complete hissy fit/melt downs about the dumbest things! Afterwards, they'd be like, "Why did I get so upset?" Beats me!!

I think by staying calm, writing your blog, etc., you're being a really good mom, not a mean one. This too shall pass, just keep tellin' yourself that!

Ah, tantrums. I guess I should consider myself lucky that my daughter just runs around the house hurling herself into things when she's mad at me.

He'll get over it, and realize that you're not scary at all. In the meantime, enjoy the silence.

We have that same swingset!

Oy, that sounds exactly like Jacob. I would have let him (Jacob) go out in just the one pair of gloves to teach him that cold hands are no fun. Jacob is extrememly stubborn, but even he won't stay outside if his hands are cold and uncomfortable.

Hey, that sounds familiar! My 3-year-old likes to yell "Save me, somebody save me from Mummy!" when I ask that he hold my hand while crossing the road.

You're a GREAT Mom. The tantrums and fits that go along with kids are just par for the course. And you dealt with it so well. You knew to leave him alone and allow yourself some breathing space ... and he eventually calmed down. So good job!!

Oh yeah, those completely unreasonable tantrums they throw at the most unexpected moments.

I've so been there.

Glad he came to his senses and enjoyed the outdoors after all :)

Isn't it amazing what can set a kid off? It always boggles my brain when my kids freak out for no apparent reason...

Isn't it amazing? You think by the time they're that old the tantrums would have stopped...mine didn't even throw tantrums when he was a toddler, but boy, if he's too tired or hungry or not feeling well...WATCH OUT! It's horrible! At least you're smart enough to know you need to get away from him! Bye the way...will your kids go out and play in the snow alone? Mine never would, and if they will, I am terriblly jealous! Hope tomorrow goes smoother!

Blogging is such wonderful therapy, isn't it?

Oh, the fun of a full-out meltdown. I sympathize - I've been there many times, too.

Glad he calmed down and went out to have some fun. I'm sure you were happy to get him out of the house for a little bit, too!

Love your swingset!
It would indeed be fun to play on one in the snow if we ever had any!! :)

Good job handling the tantrums. Avery's getting a little more "two" every day, and it's so hard...

Aren't kids nice? SlowMo once told me, after I had been puking all day "I bet you like being sick because you don't have to do anything!." I almost strangled her for saying that!

I feel your pain girl! I have twin five year old boys that throw tantrums (only occassionally now...thank God) in unison. It can be REALLY loud here sometimes. It is funny how I can go from the "meanest mommy in the world" to the bestest one in just a few short minutes....lol

I'm glad my kindergartener isn't the only one who throws fits! We think swingsets can be most fun in the snow!

Ah, yes - he does this now so you are ready for the teenage years ;)

Okay, I was in a hurry the last time I read this post, but I am still laughing about it, so I figure I'd better leave a comment. Better late than never, I suppose.:)

This just cracked me up because I had just dealt with a tantrum over a similarly silly thing- and then I heard the sassy little "oh, mom is just soooo gen.er.ous..." through the bedroom door.
